Skin Wrinkles: How are they caused?

Skin wrinkles are unsightly and occur much more often as skin ages.  There are things that can be done to slow down the progression of wrinkles and even fix wrinkle problems.  Let’s explore some of the most common reasons for wrinkles.

Age. Age is one of the most significant factors.  As a human ages, skin tends to take on creases and stress lines.  Think of this like a leather seat in a car.  When young, the finish is taught, smooth and supple, and with age and exposure to natural elements, it becomes more dry and brittle.  The reduction of natural oils in the skin with age also causes wrinkling.

Exposure to UV Light.  While tanning can make our skin look good, it accelerates the process of aging our skin.  UV light breaks down the layers of the skin including collagen and elastin fibers, causing a pattern of self destruction.  You should manage the amount of time you expose your skin to UV light, and if applicable, use a good sunscreen product.  UV light is also associated with sagging skin.

Facial Expressions.  Believe it or not, changing facial expressions break down skin further and leads to wrinkling.  For example, when you go from a full laugh where you stretch your skin to prolonged periods of your mouth being closed, your skin goes through a stretching and setting process.  Your facial muscles actually contribute to where the wrinkles and lines appear.

Smoking.  Smoking accelerates the natural aging process of the skin and decreases the natural production of collagen.  In general, smoking can set back your plan to address and combat lines and wrinkles.
